Overview
We are pleased to announce a this opportunity for Manhattan schools in CFN 405 (Karen Ditolla Network). Similar to the Donors Choose program, we are asking teachers to submit applications for specific items of equipment to be used in classrooms. The Application Process
A simple application form will need to be completed online, and reviewers will look at submissions to determine if funds should be provided to applicants. Therefore, teachers should not assume that simply completing an application form is a guarantee of winning the grant.
Decisions will be made based on the strength of the application (a sound rationale, a distinct need, etc) and an appropriate intent of use (sustainability, clear goals, etc). Impacting students is critical, and applications should very clearly state how equipment will be used with, and by, students for projects, daily work, and enhance the instruction within your classroom. Additionally, at the end of the school year, a summary (to include images) will need to be submitted to demonstrate how the resources were used and implemented in the classroom. This summary can be word processed and emailed, posted online (a school website), in the form of a short video, a digital story, and ideally include examples from students to show how they were impacted by the grant. Students can even submit the summary on behalf of a class or teacher.
Receiving the equipment
We are working on the easiest way for successful applicants to to receive equipment: Successful applicants will receive funds in their school budget, which can then be used to purchase equipment via the Department of Education’s FAMIS eCatalog. Given that teachers do not generally have access to FAMIS eCatalog or the DOE budget system (Galaxy), it will be necessary for an additional member of staff (who does have access) to be named on the application from, and for them to agree to assist in the purchasing of equipment once funds are made available in the school budget. The timeline for funds to show in a school budget via this option is approximately 2 weeks.
For those rare items that are not included in the FAMIS catalog, we can work with applicants to complete a 3-bid process to purchase an item from non-contracted vendors. This sould be the exception, not the norm.
